Have you noticed that your dog has been acting strange lately? Does he seem to be more confused than usual? If your dog has been acting as if he is in a daze and not able to focus on basic tasks, he may be suffering from a medical condition. It is not normal for your dog to forget simple commands or where his toys and food are kept. If it seems your dog is unable to think clearly, you should take him to see your veterinarian immediately to see if there is a medical condition causing the recent confusion. Some of the medical possibilities to consider are cognitive dysfunctions syndrome, a head injury, high blood sugar, seizures, a liver shunt and even dementia.

Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome

Cognitive dysfunction syndrome has recently been recognized in the medical community for dogs. Similar to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease the dog loses his way with skills that are considered basic, as well as memory and brain processing. Cognitive dysfunction syndrome can lead to a rapid decline in your dog’s normal behavior. You may see your dog getting lost in the house he has known for a decade. He also shows signs of being unable to recognize you or other family members.  Visit your veterinarian for a thorough check, and to help manage your dog’s illness if he is found to have cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

Head Injuries

A head injury could also be the culprit to your dog’s recent absentmindedness. Your dog may be suffering from a concussion. Concussions cause memory loss and the injury could be causing serious damage to your dog’s brain and requires immediate medical attention.

High Blood Sugar

When your pet’s blood sugar gets out of whack, there are a number of symptoms that follow suit. One of which is a child-like hyper activity, which can make your dog unable to concentrate and think clearly. It is essential to see your veterinarian to stabilize your dog’s blood sugar before long-term and irreversible damage occurs.

Seizures

Confusion is a classic symptom of a dog suffering from seizures. Seizures are scary but are typically pain free. After suffering a seizure; your dog may experience confusion, and disorientation, giving the impression your dog is unable to think clearly. Seizures that last for more than five minutes are critical, and all seizures may be a symptom of many different medical conditions. It is vital to seek medical consultation if you suspect your dog’s hazy memory to be related to seizures.

Liver Shunt
One of the major symptoms of a liver shunt is acting in a foggy daze. If your dog is experiencing a liver shunt, he is experiencing toxicosis from the central nervous system, which can be combined with fatigue among other symptoms. A veterinarian can properly diagnose and treat the problem through medication and possible nutrition therapy.

Dementia

Dementia is a medical condition surrounding forgetfulness and is often the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease effect aging dogs and is irreversible, but it can be managed through medication, exercise and continuous learning. Seek medical attention sooner rather than later to help manage this cognitive disease.
