As the school holidays come around we are all planning our time away with our children and we have some tips on items that will make your car journey even easier. We have all been stuck on a long journey with children, the noise, the tantrums, the toilet stops and the calls for food. What we have done is put together a list of items you should not forget on your long car journey, or in-fact any car journey involving children. A short 15 minute journey to Nanny’s can soon turn into a two hour journey if there is an accident or traffic jam, so always be prepared and don’t let a bad day turn into an awful day.
Food and Drink
Always, pack a small bag with some food and drink for your children, if they get hungry or thirsty on the journey so you don’t need to stop. Also it will save you money as service stations are not cheap for food and drink. Remember though, that if you pack too much to drink chances are you will increase your stoppages for the toilet – so bear this in mind when offering them drinks.
Car sickness tablets for children
You never know when your child might suddenly start feeling a little car sick, so it is always best to take some tablets and a bottle of water with you in the car to help them. Also, ensure they can get some fresh air to them if they need it to help settle them, you want to do all you can to ensure they are not sick.
Sick bags
Sometimes children are just sick and it’s better in a proper sick bag than over the car or in your sports bag!
Book or TV Player
A lot of cars now have TV or DVD Players; this is great to keep kids entertained on long journeys, but for those that don’t have this luxury then just a book or magazine. This will help keep the child entertained and also ensure the journey goes quickly for them, leaving you some peace and quiet to concentrate on driving.
Coats
Sometimes, your car will break down and if it does and you have to waiting by the side of the road you want to make sure your child is warm and protected. So even if the weather is okay when you leave, you never know how it might change and also what might happen. Its awful seeing a family shivering on the side of the road waiting for help, a coat and umbrella would save so much family upset.
Removable Shade
If you are travelling on a warm and sunny day then it can get hot and bright in the back of the car for the children. These are great at helping to keep the kids cool in the back of the car and also mean they can get on reading and playing without the glare of the sun on them.
Some other final interesting reminders for people travelling with children; always pack the car up first before putting in the children. Try and stop every 2 to 3 hours to help with the children stretch their legs and not get too bored, find a service station with children’s facilities. All these points should help you have a more relaxing long journey with your children.
