There are no signs in the food store aisles that read “Cheap Healthy Food for College.” However, there are deals everywhere for college students to purchase healthy foods on the cheap. College students just need to get a little savvy and use their savoir-faire for finding these deals.
Food store customer card.
One surefire way of getting healthy foods on a college budget is to get food store customer cards. Customer cards are an easy sign-up and free. Choose at least three food stores in the local area and take advantage of the stores’ weekly deals. Many times, food stores will offer a two-for-one price on meats, vegetables and bags of fruits. While in the food store, keep an eye out for last-minute markdowns. Food stores usually discount its meats up to 70 percent prior to expiration. It’s a great opportunity to stockpile some lean chicken and steak for a quick stir-fry.
Food-bulk stores.
Consider joining food-bulk stores, such as Sam’s Club or BJs. These clubs charge a paid membership fee upfront, but the savings are worth it. Students can save up to 50 percent on their food purchases. Bulk it up with some whole grain cereals, rice and low-fat snacks. For fruits, go with frozen. Frozen fruits are often half the price of fresh and are packed with nutrients. Mix them with a low-fat cottage cheese for a healthy snack.
Coupons.
Using coupons is also a great way for college students to get healthy foods at bargain prices. In addition, it’s fashionable and geeky to be a coupon junkie. Keep a file with all your favorite items and save the coupons that come with the items you purchase. There are even food stores that have a double-coupon and triple-coupon day to pack in the savings. Keeping a watchful eye using local papers and food store weekly flyers are excellent ways to keep abreast for food sales. To make sure you don’t miss any sales, sign up with a few food stores for e-mail alerts. Many food stores offer this service to its patrons, and it may even fit better with your techy lifestyle.
Local farmer’s markets.
Local farmer’s markets are another venue for students to grab healthy foods at great prices. With lower overhead, these markets can provide foods at lower prices than many of the food stores. These markets also showcase a wide variety of healthy produce, including fresh heads of broccoli, leafy lettuces, shitake mushrooms, delicious apples and much more. Some even offer lean meats, nuts and natural honeys.
Tap water.
While students need plenty of hydration, buying bottled water is a huge rip off. Over the course of your college years, you’ll probably spend a semester’s tuition on bottled water. Getting a Brita will save loads of cash. With a Brita, you’ll be getting fresh filtered water for plenty of that needed H2O. Invest in a cheap water bottle and keep it handy for a quick thirst-quencher. For some vitamin C, infuse it with a squeeze of fresh lemon or orange.
Embracing these tactics will put you on the road to healthy eating with a price tag you can afford.
