Tarot Card Basics

Reading tarot cards can lead to real discoveries. Learn the basics of reading tarot cards to get a start on this interesting path.

There are several reasons to use tarot cards. Maybe you want to explore a new path of spirituality. Maybe you want answers to your tough questions. Or maybe you simply want to have fun and see what this tarot craze is all about. Tarot is a way to connect with the unconscious self. The most important thing to remember when reading tarot cards is to believe in them. If you don’t have faith in the power of the cards, you won’t be able to reap their benefits. Even if you’re reading tarot for fun, try to focus on your belief in them for the time being.

Who Reads Tarot Cards?

There are a few options when it comes to having your tarot cards read. You can purchase a deck and a guidebook to learn how to read tarot cards yourself. Alternatively, you can visit a psychic who uses tarot cards in their practice. Psychics use a variety of tools to read people, including Ouija boards and palm readings. Not every clairvoyant will be able to perform a tarot reading. If you choose to read the cards for yourself, it’s important to remain objective. Pretend that you’re reading the cards for a friend. Letting too much emotion into the reading can effect its outcome.

Tarot Cards

There are several decks of tarot cards to choose from. If you’re a beginner, opt for an easy deck, like the Rider-Waite tarot cards. You can find tarot cards online or at most bookstores. Keep your tarot cards protected when they’re not in use by wrapping them in a scarf or soft cloth. Some stores will even sell speciality boxes for tarot cards.

Preparing the Reading

Concentrate on a particular question that you want answered as you shuffle the deck. Cut the deck if you’re reading the cards for yourself; if you’re performing medium readings for someone else, ask them to cut the deck. The most common way to cut a tarot deck is to take it in your left hand and split it up into three piles, from the left to the right. Put the center stack on the left stack, and then put this combined stack onto the right stack. As the deck is cut, whoever is having their reading done should ask their question out loud. Deal the deck in a tarot spread, such as a four-card diamond layout.

Reading the Tarot Cards

Look at the position of the cards once they’re dealt. Cards that face the reader are in a positive position, while cards that face away from the reader are in a negative position. There are several cards in a tarot deck, and they all have a particular meaning. Purchase a book on how to read tarot cards so that you know exactly how to read each one.

Basic Tarot Cards and Meanings

The Fool tarot card signifies new beginnings and opportunities. If it’s in a reverse position, though, it can mean that a bad decision has been made. The Magician card represents creativity and will power when in the positive position, and insecurity and weak will in the negative position. The High Priestess signifies wisdom and a lack of patience in the positive position. In the negative position, the High Priestess is a symbol of selfishness and ignorance.
