It has been such a long time since cufflinks were a mainstream part of men’s fashion, so much so that many men have simply forgotten how to choose and wear cufflinks. In many cases, men will be entirely alien to the concept of cufflinks, meaning they shy away from buying men’s shirts which require cufflinks to be worn.
French Cuff Shirts
Cufflinks are to be worn with French Cuff shirts, which differ from the traditional button cuff shirts we see in the vast majority if stores in the modern day. French Cuff men’s shirts are seen as a more formal piece of attire, more elegant and higher class, although button cuff men’s shirts still win contests for convenience.
Types Of Cufflinks
There are several types of cufflinks available, some more easily than others. Try and avoid the silk knots that come with the shirt, especially on more formal occasions.
Torpedo cufflinks are the most common and are widely available. If the store sells men’s shirts then it is likely they will sell torpedo cufflinks. These are what most people recognise as regular cufflinks, with a decorative design on the face with a clip to keep them secure.
A more formal choice is chain link cufflinks, although these are not commonly seen they are available in stores. These are more common at black tie events and you may need to buy them as part of a stud set. These consist of two decorative faces held together by a chain.
Bar cufflinks are a popular choice, and the most similar. These consist of two balls either end of the bar, which simply slip through your cuffs to hold them in place.
Extra Important Advice
If you have a French Cuff men’s shirt, ensure you only wear it with a suit. French Cuffs can sit awkwardly under a tighter garment, such as a cardigan, and will be difficult to recover into a crisp look should you remove the cardigan. A suit gives a French Cuff ample room to sit, and is a perfect match for the overall formality of the look.
Ensure that any metals on your body are matching. If you have a silver belt buckle, then the cufflinks should match too. Keep your metals matching right down to considering any detail on your shoes.
Finally, remember that cufflinks, like ties, are a symbol of formal style. Novelty designs should be avoided at all costs.
