Cataracts are a common problem that come with advanced age and dreaded by many as a film covers the eye and reduces vision. Cataract surgery may be the last resort in the most serious cases. However, preventative measures are best and cataracts can be avoided by having a proper diet to enhance the body’s overall health and eye health as well.

The actual cause of cataracts is unsure. However, medical researchers believe that oxidative strain destroys portions of the eye’s lens, resulting in a cloudy lens which must then be surgically replaced by an artificial, intraocular lens. No one relishes surgery and making wise choices in eating from early on could make all the difference. Digesting foods and vitamin supplements that are high in antioxidants may be the first line of defense against cataracts and a host of other health problems. Antioxidants target free radicals Free radicals are molecules in the body which actually cause damage to the body’s cells through oxidation. By avoiding oxidation, cell damage is averted.
Vitamin A, C, and E are especially beneficial as antioxidants and should be included in vitamins and food for the best odds against cataracts. Dark green vegetables are an excellent source of good antioxidants as well as colorful fruits such as oranges and blueberries. In addition, fish and its omega-3 fatty acids is another rich source of antioxidants and should be eaten twice a week. Carbohydrates should be reduced for better eye health. Five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables should be included in the diet throughout the day at each meal and as a snack. Whole grains are important as well and three, daily servings are recommended. Soft drinks, fried foods, and foods that are high in sugar or sodium need to be avoided.
Overall, the diet to prevent cataracts is the same diet that has been prescribed to promote healthy living in all ways. When a person makes wise choices in food, avoids smoking, and protects the body from UV rays with quality sunglasses as well as sunblock, the body will respond accordingly. When one considers the body as a temple, an individual will realize the importance of treating it as such. Taking care of the body and giving it the best sources of fuel will enhance a person’s life. A multitude of problems, including cataracts, are avoided in a long, healthy life. Good eating means feeling good.
