When you are going to start building a survival kit, you need to make sure you have three of the basic necessities for life. These are, of course, shelter, food, and water. Out of all of these, water is probably going to be the hardest to find in a survival situation. The point of having a survival kit is to give you a chance to make it if any sort of disaster strikes. In nearly all of the most possible disasters, clean water is going to be extremely difficult to find. The human body can only last three days without water, sometimes less if you are exerting yourself and expending a lot of water through sweat, so it’s extremely important to make sure you have enough water to last for at least a week, more if possible.
Water is going to be hard to pack into a mobile survival kit because it’s heavy, bulky, and takes up a lot of space. Because of this, a lot of survival enthusiasts opt for water purification tablets. These are small and can be carried with relative ease, and when dropped into a bottle of water will sanitize it, killing most bacteria and microorganisms that can make you sick.
You should stock up at least 30 of these tablets, although if you want to go all the way it’s not uncommon for people to buy a few hundred at a time. You will not be able to put a price on fresh water after a global apocalypse, and as such these tablets can also be extremely valuable as barter tools. If something happens to your survival kit though, you want to be able to still get clean water. Boiling water is the obvious solution, so in addition to water purification tablets you should always have a way to build a fire. Boiling water for 10 minutes will effectively kill most bacteria on the planet, or at least the ones that are common in populated areas of the globe.
How do you create fire though? There are a lot of different ways. The most obvious would be to pack some waterproof matches and a few butane lighters into your survival kit, but if you become separated from the kit you need to find other ways to coax a flame out of some wood. If the disaster hasn’t blocked out the sun with clouds, you can use the bottom of a soda can or beer can to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto a bit of dry tinder. The concave surface acts as a refraction lens, much like a Fresnel lens.
Alternatively, with no other options you can create a bow to rub sticks together and create enough friction heat to light some tinder. By doing this you can create a fire for both cooking and water purification, not to mention heat. Many of these items can be found in the best survival kits that you can buy online, so those are the best places to start.
