Many people in the United States sit in front of their computer all day at work. With how busy our schedule can get, many of these people forget to stand up frequently throughout the day, or they cannot find the time to walk around the office and keep their blood circulating as much as they would like. The problem is that many of these people are sitting in an unsupportive, rigid computer chair that does not offer their body the support and movement they need to reduce the risk of back pain, neck strain, headaches and bad circulation caused by sitting for long amounts of time.
Computers have only recently come into our workplace, and although they make work easier, they also leave you more sedentary in one position for too many hours at a time. Office computer chairs are an important aspect to overall office health that is all too frequently looked over. This is especially the case in home offices where people are using kitchen table chairs or couches to do their work instead of proper computer chairs. It’s time to make a change for your health.
The following are a few things to consider when purchasing your next computer chair.
1. Arms of the Chair
While some people find it more comfortable to not have arms on their office chair, others want them high and at their sides. A good solution when buying the same computer chair for multiple people is to find one with adjustable arms.
2. Built-in Support
Your back will suffer when sitting for extended periods of time. For those times when you cannot or you simply forget to get up from behind the computer and move around, it is necessary that your computer chair has built-in lumbar support to help relieve some of the pressure put on your back.
3. Height Adjustment
It’s an obvious statement that people are different heights. Because of this, not all computer chairs should be the same height. Allow employees to adjust their computer chair to the height that is best for them to see the computer screen straight on. This will reduce neck strain and headaches from staring at a screen at weird angles all day.
4. Flexibility
A chair should encourage movement from the people sitting in it. Even though the person may be sitting for a long period of time, bodies have a natural tendency to want to move around. A chair should be flexible enough to move back and forth and give the person sitting in it the ability to move as they choose, even while sitting.
Computer work can be strenuous on your back and shoulders. A proper computer chair can help protect against short-term and long-term discomfort caused by sitting.
