The answer to why kids love birds is a simple one. Birds can fly and other animals can’t! Children are fascinated by this. Birding is a great family activity for parents looking to get their children outdoors. Encouraging your kids to partake in bird activities can be as easy as heading out of your backdoor. They can also teach your children some essential skills.
Flying isn’t the only factor that recommends birds to kids. Birds can sing and they usually come in vibrant and interesting colours. If you would like your child to begin to grasp notions of diversity, environmental responsibility, geography and history then spend a day in the garden and immerse yourself in some easy bird activities for children.
How to make birding fun for kids
A Gift for a Crow
Notorious for taking and hoarding shiny objects, crows are simple birds to lure. Get your kids to collect shiny items from around the house (aluminium foil is a good one) and get them to hide them in tricky places near one of your windows. You’ll eventually catch hoards of crows trying to steal your hidden treasures. This is a great bird activity for preschoolers.
Build an Eco-Friendly Bird Feeder

You’ll need the following materials:
- Large fruit or vegetable
- Cutting Board
- Knife and spoon
- A metre of string
- Hammer and nail
Directions:
Take the knife and slice the top of your chosen fruit or vegetable off and scoop out the insides. Make sure to leave enough of an opening for birds to access the feed.
Use your hammer and nail to drill a hole through each side of the skin near the top. Drill four holes for extra balance.
On the outside of your fruit or vegetable, take your string and place it through your first hole, stretching across and through to the second hole. Leave a long piece of string on either side. Now do it again but through the second hole. Take the hanging string and lift it above your feeder. Knot the ends.
Place the hollowed feeder in your fridge until you’re ready to hang it up outside. Easy and green, these types of bird activities are sure to enchant your child.
Make a Birdseed Cake

Birds and kids both love sweet treats. Out of all of the bird activities for kids, this is the one they are likely to love the most.
Ingredients:
- One cup of corn meal
- Two cups of mixed seed and one large jar of peanut butter
Instructions
Melt the peanut butter in the microwave for a minute and pour all the ingredients into a medium sized mixing bowl and mix thoroughly. Pour the concoction into a casserole dish and refrigerate overnight. The next day, cut out squares of the bird seed cake and place in your eco-friendly bird feeder.
Bird activities are a way of guaranteeing your child some outdoor excitement and some quality time with their number one- you.
