Butterflies, Dragonflies, and Other Fanciful Wedding Motifs

A pretty motif is a great way to add charm and character to your wedding. Among the loveliest designs are butterflies and dragonflies. Learn how to use a fanciful motif to enhance your wedding to its fullest potential.

Perhaps the best thing about butterflies is how colorful they are. Take full advantage of this when incorporating them into your wedding. It would look absolutely stunning to have a tall wedding cake decorated with a rainbow of butterflies “perched” on the tiers. A single colorful butterfly can be incorporated into an all white bridal bouquet for a delightful surprise splash of color. Or if you wish, you can create a one-of-a-kind bouquet made entirely of fabric, paper, or feather butterflies. It would be as colorful as a brooch bouquet, only more whimsical.

If you are using a butterfly theme for your wedding, it would also be wonderful to incorporate them into the wedding attire. Swarovski crystal butterfly pendants would be fantastic as the wedding jewelry gifts for your bridesmaids. Your flower girl could wear a floaty organza dress with a pair of butterfly wings on her back. That would be a charming idea for a garden wedding, and most little girls would absolutely adore getting to wear the wings. A crystal butterfly accent on the toe of the bride’s shoes are a fun way to bring the motif into her attire in a subtle fashion.

Dragonflies are another fanciful wedding motif that is terrific for spring and summer weddings. Shades of blue, green, and purple are especially well suited to this wedding theme. Emboss a pretty dragonfly in flight on the top of your wedding invitations for a sweet touch. Choose napkins for the reception tables which have a dragonfly embroidered on the corner, or use solid napkins with a dragonfly napkin ring. What fun! Once again your wedding cake will be a place to showcase your special motif. Picture a cake covered in periwinkle fondant with shimmering emerald and cobalt dragonflies around the tiers. The cake will almost be too pretty to cut.

The dragonfly theme can easily be carried into other elements of your wedding. You could give your flower girl a pretty piece of wedding jewelry with a tiny silver dragonfly on it. There are also soaps with the motif on them that could be used for wedding favors. You might even wish to DIY a pretty garland of paper dragonflies to hang on the backs of the newlyweds’ chairs at the dinner table. It will make a fun memento to preserve for after the wedding.

There are certainly quite a few other ideas for fanciful wedding motifs. Dainty little birds like bluebirds are a nice option, as are ladybugs (a gardener’s best friend), Victorian floral designs based on morning glories, and even whimsical little fairies. When you choose a special theme for your wedding, it will help you bring the whole design together into a beautiful and memorable party.
