There is one thing that many college students have in common other than studying for hours and hours each day.  Being broke seems to come with the classification as a “college student” too.  For this reason, it is important that those who are in college know how to manage the little bit of money they do have.  Below are 15 money managing tips for college students.

• Know your budget. It is important that you go into each semester knowing what your budget it. This can help you better plan and prepare for what is ahead.  How much money will you have to spend this semester?
• Don’t fall back on credit cards. Spending on credit cards may seem like the easy way out. In reality, it can leave you in big trouble.  Avoid spending on credit cards so that you aren’t left finding ways to pay the money back once college is over.
• Don’t get more bills than you can afford. Be conscious of each and every bill that you have.  Don’t go and get more bills if you can’t afford the ones you already have. The fewer bills, the better off you will be.
• Live on campus if you can. Living on campus is often cheaper than having to pay rent for a place nearby.  Check out the dorms on campus in an effort to save money and be closer to class each day.
• Drive as little as possible. The more you drive, the more expensive college life will be.  Drive only if you have to so that you can spend the gas money elsewhere.
• Get the school meal plan.  Eating on campus is another great way to save money. A school meal plan will be healthier, cheaper, and quicker for you than going elsewhere for food.
• Work on campus. In an effort to better your finances, choose to work on campus. The bookstore or other campus offices will be willing to work around your schedule and can provide a supplemental income.
• Get organized. Organize your class schedule, work schedule, and study schedule so that they flow together easily.  This will help you avoid getting stressed.
• Apply for financial aid. Colleges have financial aid available to those in need. Have you applied for financial aid?
• Look for a bank that does not have checking fees. Paying close attention to your financial decisions can also help you manage your money. Choose a bank that has no checking fees.
• Do you have overdraft protection? Many banks will offer overdraft protection for those times that you do get in a bind. Use this as an avenue to better manage your finances.
• Write down everything you spend. Get a journal and keep track of everything that you spend. This way you will know where your money is going.
• Give up the coffee habit.  The local coffee shop can quickly take your hard earned money.  Don’t spend all your extra cash on coffee. Get a coffee pot and make it in your dorm room.
• Balance your checkbook weekly. Always know how much you have to spend.
• Are you eligible for scholarships? Scholarships are free money! Apply for every scholarship possible and be sure to renew each school year.
• How much are your parents willing to help? Your parents may be willing to give you financial support while you are in school. Manage this money well so it can go as far as it possible can.
• Make money from a skill or hobby. If you have a hobby, try to make some extra cash off of it.  Tutoring is a great way to get extra money while in college.
• Save when possible. Practice saving in college so that you have a brighter future once you start your career.
• Beware of financial loans. Remember that you will have to pay back all the money that is loaned to you over the course of your college career.
• Use campus amenities. Take advantage of EVERYTHING the campus has to offer such as free gym membership, tutoring, etc.
