The Popularity and Benefits of Kit Homes

Kit homes are not a new phenomenon, but date back to the early twentieth century. The homes increased in popularity with the sale of mail order homes through the Sears Roebuck catalog. The homes were preconfigured and cut into manageable sizes and shipped throughout the country on trains to the home sites to be assembled.
kit homes

Unlike a portable home, a preconfigured home is a permanent house that is initially constructed at a factory instead of framed by a carpenter at a home site. The homes have withstood decades of wear and tear and can still be found throughout the country.

Even though prefabricated homes have not been as popular in the last few decades, they are durable and can provide homeowners an inexpensive option to build a home. A standard kit home can save home owners nearly 30 to 40 percent compared to a traditional home construction methods. The designs of each home can vary based on the needs of the home owner and can range from one to three story units. These kits are excellent options for home owners that would like to take a more active role in building their home while saving on the cost of construction. Additional benefits include designing the home and choosing the colors and configuration of each room.

There are normally four types of kit homes available: log homes, domes, panelized and farm homes. Many of the homes are a hybrid of these options which provide a wide range of possibilities for home owners. Each kit is precut in order to allow easy assembly at the home site. The precut portions of the home help save on the cost of labor, wasted materials and tools. Home owners are also able to save on the cost of purchasing the home since the homes are manufactured in a factory.

Even though the homes are manufactured in a factory, the quality standard of the homes meets industry home construction standards. Skilled laborers construct the home and cut the lumber length wise in order to guarantee easy shipping and assembly. The homes including finished flooring, railings, doors and windows to construct a complete home. Based on the manufacturer selected, home owners may have the option to design certain aspects of the model home kit in order to create a desirable home.

Summary and Study of Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Polish-British author Joseph Conrad, originally published in 1899. It deals with both the European colonization of Africa and questions of human nature, specifically “the heart of darkness” that exists within the supposedly civilized man. With luck this summary will help you with any research or essay editing you need on this topic.

Story Summary

The story begins with a framing device of several British men on a yacht in the Thames, including an unnamed narrator. The principle character, however, is Charlie Marlow, who notes that London, despite its prosperity and power, was “one of the dark places on Earth” during Roman times. He then begins to tell the others about his trip to Africa years ago, with the majority of the book told from his perspective.

Marlow, who always wanted to be an explorer, gets a job with a company that collects ivory in the Belgian Congo. There are signs that the job may be unsavory, and Marlow arrives at the Central Trading Station in Africa to discover one company worker has killed himself. The others often appear elegant and refined, but are ill-tempered or unsettling. There are African men working with them, but the white men often abuse or even kill them.

Marlow is set to go work at a station downstream that is run by a man named Kurtz. Some of the other traders hate Kurtz’s competition, even desiring his death, but no one denies that he is a genius, brilliant at everything from art to journalism. Marlow is eager to meet him, but is delayed at the Central Trading Station for a few months due to his steamboat breaking. He finally sets off on the foreboding trip, followed on the shore by natives who seem to doing mysterious rites. At one point they find firewood by an old shack with a note to keep going to Kurtz; shortly thereafter the boat is attacked by natives, through Marlow’s crew gets away.

They approach Kurtz’s station, which is surrounded by the heads of natives stuck on poles. There Marlow meets a Russian man whose clothes make him look like a harlequin; he was the one who left the firewood. The Russian extols Kurtz’s amazing oratory skills and knowledge, and Marlow learns that both the natives and the Russian have come to see him as essentially a god. Kurtz is sick, however, but resists leaving the station and his native worshipers, including one African woman who seems to be his mistress. It is revealed that he ordered the attack on Marlow’s ship to prevent them from taking him.

They finally get him to come with them, however, and Kurtz trusts his papers to Marlow. Among them is a picture of his “Intended” (fiancée) back home, as well as a book about Africa that Kurtz had been writing. Its quality disintegrated with Kurtz’s sanity, the last page scrawled with “Kill all the brutes!” Kurtz dies, his final words being “The horror — the horror!” Marlow returns to Europe, and after a year makes a visit to Kurtz’s mourning “Intended.” She is clearly still enamored with his previous brilliance and virtue, and Marlow lies to claim that he died saying her name.

Marlow finishes his story to the others on the yacht, who are silent.

Themes

The title of Heart of Darkness has a double meaning: Marlow’s trip takes him to the middle of Africa, the unknown and thus “dark” continent, but realizes that the heart of darkness is really within humankind. In particular the book is critical of the cruelty and greed that comes from the African colonization.

Kurtz is initially set up as an ideal man: he is full of intelligence, creativity and charisma, who has achieved much for his company and, supposedly, the Africans. More specifically, he seems to be the ideal European man, described as having ancestry from multiple countries; all of Europe, Marlow notes, helped to create him. Kurtz is thus a symbol of Western culture and its degradation into barbarism. The other Europeans Marlow encounters are only mildly better; they come off as unpleasant, abuse their African workers and wish death on Kurtz not because of his crimes, but merely because he presents unwanted competition for ivory.

Despite criticizing their mistreatment, there is some controversy about Conrad’s depiction of Africans. Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe wrote an influential essay editing the traditional readings of this novella, noting that even Marlow’s sympathetic descriptions always paint the natives in animalistic terms. None of the African characters are named, and only one gets an actual line of dialogue. Furthermore, neither the characters nor the tribes seem to have any real individuality or culture, merely being abused by the whites and flocking to Kurtz’s “enlightenment.” (Achebe’s own first novel, Things Fall Apart, is sometimes seen as a counterpoint to Heart of Darkness in how it depicts colonialism’s positive and negative impacts on the Nigerian Igbo people.)

Say No to Trolling-How to Express Your Opinion Without Offending

At one time or another in our lives, we’ve been in the hard situation where we want to express our opinion, but we’re afraid that our opinion may be offensive. When this happens, we may overcome our fear and express our opinion with no mind to others’ feelings, or we may clam up and keep our opinion to ourselves to avoid being rude.

Don’t be a troll…

Some people use the Internet to speak their mind because it can provide a sense of anonymity. Many people leave comments on blog posts or websites under a pseudonym. Hiding behind this secret identity gives them the confidence to speak their mind without worrying about the wrath they may receive from others.
People who use inappropriate or offensive messages on the Internet or who use public forums to stir up controversy are known as trolls. Trolls hide behind some form of anonymity on the Internet to say offensive and degrading things and get people into a debate. But if you have something to say, and you think it may be offensive, trolling is not the answer. There are actually plenty of ways you can express your opinion without offending others. It just takes a bit of practice.
1. Remember That Etiquette is not Only for Face-to-Face Contact.

Chances are, your parents instilled the basic forms of etiquette into you at an early age. You know how to say please and thank you. You know to be kind to your elders, and you believe in doing unto others as you would have done to you. When it comes to face-to-face interactions, we tend to follow these basic forms of etiquette, but when we get behind a computer screen, we tend to throw etiquette to the wind. Just because you’re staring at a computer screen doesn’t mean there is not another human being on the other side of the blog, chat room or public forum.

Don’t spout off obscenities and use offensive language. Instead, remain polite and use clear and concise messaging to deliver your opinion. If you utilize good grammar and basic etiquette techniques, your opinion will be taken seriously and will be less likely to be deemed as offensive.

2. Only Make Educated Opinions.

While this may seem like an oxymoron, it’s actually very important that you have facts to back up your opinion. Even if you say something in the most polite way possible, if you have no evidence to back up your opinion, other trolls will start eating you alive.
The more evidence you can use to prove you have a valid reason for your opinion will incline people to have an open mind and hear you out. If your points are valid, you may make others join in on your opinion, or people will respect you enough to agree to disagree without getting nasty.

3. Stick to the Facts.

This somewhat goes along with #2, but with more emphasis on your delivery. When you are sharing your opinion, you need to focus on the facts and not on your personal experiences. For example, you should say, “I think the Chicago Bulls are the best basketball team in the NBA because they have Derek Rose, who was last year’s MVP, and they have the best record.” Using facts exudes confidence, but it doesn’t make you sound conceited, and more people are willing to accept your opinion if it contains facts. If you said, “I think the Chicago Bulls are the best basketball team in the NBA because they are awesome and I love watching them”, your lack of facts is going to stir this statement into an Internet frenzy.

4. Pretend you’re Talking Directly to Someone’s Face.

Some things may simply be better left unsaid. When you’re typing out a statement to post online that you may consider to be offensive, first pretend that you are saying it directly to someone’s face. Would you still say it? People use the Internet to express their displeasure, their dislikes and their downright hatreds about anything and everything. If you are planning on using the Internet to say something mean or derogatory about someone else, consider if you would say it to their face or if you’re only saying it because you feel as if the Internet makes you unreachable. If there is no way you would say this to someone’s face, there is no reason to say it on the Internet.
Remember that the Internet is permanent. What you say on the Internet, even if it occurs behind a pseudonym, will be around forever. You may be able to delete a post or comment, but if the message has already gone viral, the damage has already been done.
Anonymity doesn’t give you the right to be mean. You can still be judged by strangers. The Internet may make you faceless to countless others who utilize it everyday, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be judged. Rather than judge you based on your height, weight, ethnicity, hair, clothes or any other facet that people use to pass judgement, they’ll judge you based on the words that you write. Instead of judging you for being old or short or overweight, people will judge you for being mean or offensive.
Remember that just because you’re behind a computer doesn’t mean that you can irritate and offend people as often as you want. Instead, remain courteous, use facts and decide whether or not your statement is worth saying. When you do all of this, you can express your opinion without worrying about being offensive.

Pirates: Myth vs. Reality!

Most of us think of pirates as loveable rogues who sailed the seven seas looking for booty whilst singing songs and telling scallywags to walk the plank. In reality they were murdering rapists who stole soap and candles.

Myth 1: Pirates Followed a Code of Honour.

People love Hollywood pirates because they’re seen more as rascals than out and out villains. Sure Jack Sparrow breaks a few laws but he’s got a good set of morals. It’s led to a common belief that pirates only fought hard when they had to, and wouldn’t hurt people unless they got in the way of their treasure.

The Reality:

The reality is that pirates were utterly ruthless. Sure the crew stuck to a code of honour when it came to sharing their plunder, but their victims and prisoners received no such treatment.

There are tonnes of dark stories about 17th and 18th century pirates, many of which involve rape, murder and grotesque violence. There’s even a tale of one particularly cruel pirate cutting out the heart of one prisoner and feeding it to another. That doesn’t sound very honourable to me!

Myth 2: Pirates said “Arrr” “Yarrr” and “Garrr” A Lot!

Ask one of your friends to talk like a pirate and I guarantee they’ll start making these noises. They might even throw in an “ahoy matey” or a “shiver me timbers” if you’re really lucky.

The Reality:

But there’s no such thing as a pirate voice. They came from a whole range of different countries so they didn’t even all speak the same language, let alone use the same slang.

It’s Robert Newton’s fault that we all sound like angry English farmers when we try to impersonate pirates. In Disney’s 1950s adaptation of Treasure Island he played the role of Long John Silver and really went all out on the West Country accent. Cheers Rob!

Myth 3: Pirates Buried Their Treasure.

This is certainly one of the most enduring images of early modern piracy. In fact pretty much every pirate tale seems to involve finding a treasure map and setting sail to dig it up.

The Reality:

When you think about it burying treasure just sounds ridiculous. It only ever happened a handful if times. Pirates didn’t expect to live for very long so it was much more common for them to find the nearest port and blow it all on food, booze and girls. The portrayal of Tortuga in Pirates of the Caribbean is actually pretty accurate.

Myth 4: Pirate Treasure Means Gold.

Gold and silver are central to the plot of every pirate story ever told. It gives the impression that they weren’t interested in anything else.

The Reality:

Don’t get me wrong, pirates did love gold. If it was on offer they’d definitely take it. It’s just that it was much more common for their loot to consist of candles, soap, tobacco and some salted fish. Not very rock ‘n’ roll, but just as useful to an outlawed sailor.

Different Methods of Waste Management

According to the United Nations, the current world population is 7 billion. All of these 7 billion people generate trash everyday, whether they are young or old. Therefore, it is not surprising that the world is now facing serious environmental concerns and waste management problems. Because of this, different governments around the world are coming up with various waste management methods to handle the crisis at hand.

Waste management refers to the accumulation, conveyance, recycling and getting rid of waste materials.

This process usually deals with waste made by human enterprise and aims to reduce its effects on the health of the people and the environment. This process also deals with getting resources from discarded materials such as metal, glass or plastic. It is also associated with controlling different waste materials such as hospital waste, radioactive waste, and hazardous chemicals from industrial factories.

The practices of waste management are different from country to country, and from rural areas to urban areas. Typically, the local government is responsible for waste management in a particular locality. There are several methods of waste management that the local government can use.

The landfill is the most popular method of waste management and is used in most countries.

Landfills are found in unused mining areas, quarries or borrow pits. Landfills should have materials that can prevent leachate to seep through the water table to prevent contamination. It should also be equipped with gas extraction systems to reduce the amount of landfill gas such as methane and carbon dioxide that can go into the atmosphere. Landfills are popular because they are inexpensive to maintain. However, some countries are having issues with it because of the absence of available space and pollution problems.

Incineration is another popular method of waste management.

This process involves turning solid waste into gas and residue by means of combustion, reducing the volume of solid waste by up to 30%. This is usually done in countries with small land areas such as Japan and with certain hazardous wastes such as biohazards. However, incineration is an unpopular method of waste management because it releases a lot of pollutants in the atmosphere.

Prevention and reduction is the best method in waste management.

These are done by recycling and sustainability methods. Recycling refers to gathering and reusing different kinds of waste materials such as paper, plastic, and metal. These materials are often used for making new products. There are a lot of recyclable materials out there such as aluminum, polyethylene, paper, and PVC. Biological reprocessing and energy recovery are parts of sustainability methods. Biological reprocessing, also known as composting, is usually done on organic wastes, and is extremely useful in agriculture. Energy recovery, also known as waste-to-energy, uses the energy content of waste products for fuel. However, while recycling is used worldwide, energy recovery is still unknown in some parts of the world.

The correct method of waste management is important for the environment. People must do their own part in recycling and reducing the amount of trash they produce every day. Mother Earth will thank them for it.

Article was written by Stuart Bryce who runs a waste management and skip hire company in Scotland called Lothian Skip Hire.

Nature’s Call Is Sure to Take a Backseat in This Horrifying Bathroom

Bathrooms are places where you go right after getting up in the morning as well as before going to sleep. You start your day by brushing your teeth and by going to the toilet to become fresh. The bathroom is also the place where you can relax while taking a shower. Usually bathrooms are a very comfortable place where you can be with yourself in the best possible manner. But there are bathrooms that are terrifying and horrifying and people would not like to use these kinds of bathrooms at all. There are different styles of bathrooms and they are done in various designs and patterns. Some of them might have an adventure bent to it, but this bathroom is just beyond imagination.

Bathroom located on the 15th floor on an elevator shaft

The concept that bathroom is a place to relax with completely vanish after one sees this bathroom. The bathroom is located on the 15th floor of the building on an elevator shaft. The first thing you see on entering the bathroom is the deep shaft that goes down 14 storey’s. It is truly terrifying and might cause heart attacks to people who have a weak heart. The bathroom is a part of the penthouse that is located in Guadalajara in Mexico. The penthouse is situated in a colonial building in Mexico that was built in the 1970s. Any person who lives in the penthouse has to use this toilet and it is a scary experience definitely in all ways.

Unique concept of the architect behind this incredibly scary bathroom

The architect behind this unique project is Hernandez Silva Arquitectos. According to him, the elevator shaft was created with a vision that there would be another elevator that would be installed in the building. But that never happened for a long time and the shaft remained empty. In fact, no elevator will be installed anymore. Therefore the free space could be utilized for creating something unique and different and then came the idea of creating the penthouse bathroom with a hard glass base so that people could see down the 15 storey’s from the bathroom. Some guests truly opined that there is no doubt that nature’s call would take a backseat after coming to this bathroom.

Good quality materials used in constructing the bathroom

It might seem horrifying and terrifying but it is also true that the bathroom is a piece of art in itself. Lots of work and efforts have been put into it so that the right structure can be created. The glass that is used on the floor of the bathroom is one of the finest qualities of hard glasses so that it does not break on applying great amount of pressure as well. Metallic beams are also provided in a crisscross fashion so that there is ample support provided to the glass. All the other facilities are available in the bathroom as all normal bathrooms. When the lights are turned off in the night, the bathroom becomes all the scarier.
